The bounty of three converging rivers led Native Americans to settle in what is now known as Fort Wayne. It is the second-largest city in the state of Indiana. Fort Wayne is home to over 100 miles of trails, over 80 award-winning parks, and almost a dozen refreshing splash pads. A few of Fort Wayne’s most popular parks are:
Foster Park was built in 1912 when Samuel and Colonel David N. Foster and their families donated 67 acres to Fort Wayne. Since then, 151 acres have been added to the original land. The beautiful and historic park contains a golf course, a dog park, pavilions for renting, playgrounds, a splash pad, community gardens, and even a bridal area. Additionally, the Fort Wayne Rivergreenway passes through Foster Park, allowing for people to walk, run, and bike through the nature trail. Cool off with the splash pad or enjoy a round of golf at the golf course!
Kreager Park is full of activities, including tennis courts, soccer fields, softball fields, and a splash pad. It is home to Indiana’s first boundless playground, an inclusive playground where children of all abilities gain important developmental and physical benefits of unstructured play. It includes a splash pad that features three circular pods and activity areas on changing elevations with accessible ramps. The playground has traditional swings and climbing opportunities as well as other activities carefully designed for therapeutic and learning purposes. Kreager Park also connects to the Rivergreen Trail, a 24-mile long linear park that runs along the banks of the St. Marys, St. Joseph, and Maumee Rivers.
Promenade Park was developed as part of the first phase of Fort Wayne’s transformational riverfront project. It offers a unique location to help further connect the St. Marys, St. Joseph, and Maumee Rivers to Fort Wayne’s downtown area. Fort Wayne’s downtown area is a thriving urban center offering recreation, arts, and culture. Amenities include dining, shopping, attractions, events, and scheduled activities. Outdoor recreational activities include kayaking, boat rides, bike trails, and a trip to the historic Old Fort, where hands-on demonstrations and reenactments of the Civil War take place. Promenade Park is a definite must-see!
